You may have heard me say in the past that we’re developing authors, creators, researchers, designers, investigators, team builders and teammates – the list goes on. The way we do that at The Wellington School is to encourage and foster innovative curriculum. We ask teachers to challenge our students in new ways and to make those experiences authentic. The Wellington School prides itself on putting the student in the driver’s seat of his or her learning experience.

Part of the way we support classroom innovation is to celebrate it, and this blog is dedicated to that purpose.

Teachers, students, parents – please use the discussion box below to share them with our community!

I would like to congratulate Mary Potter on being the 2009 recipient of the Golden Apple Award for The Wellington School. This award is given by the Upper Arlington Civic Association. From the award application: “Each year, the Golden Apple Award recognizes teachers who have made an outstanding impact on the students and families of our Upper Arlington community. Nominations for these awards are accepted from any community member including students, parents, co-workers, friends, and neighbors.”

On Thursday, at Middle School lunch, Mary was given the award from the Upper Arlington Civic Association Directors and many accolades were read from her students and fellow faculty members. Congratulations!!!

Faculty, Staff Hits 100%

Big news yesterday: 100% of Wellington’s faculty and staff has contributed to The Wellington Fund. Wellington is the first school with which I have ever been associated in which 100% of faculty and staff has seen it as part of their commitment to the school to contribute to the annual fund. To put this in perspective, teachers and staff in most schools rightly feel that through their long hours and care, they are making their contribution. How unusual it is that every faculty and staff member would go above and beyond in this way.

To think about this in another way, in my 29 years in independent schools, it is rare that faculty and staff agreed 100% on anything. One of the glories of working in schools is that we encourage diversity of thinking, which results in more debate than in most fields. So it is even more meaningful that on this measure, there is 100% agreement. I’m inspired, and hope you are, by the example of a group of people who have a foregone high salaries in order to share their lives with young people, and have demonstrated their commitment in yet another way.
