Each year, the Upper Arlington Civic Association’s Golden Apple Award recognizes teachers who have made an outstanding impact on the students and families in Upper Arlington. Wellington 2nd Grade teacher Shelly Simpson won this year’s Apple, and UACA members joined Shelly’s students and colleagues to surprise her with the award over lunch on Tuesday. Simpson has taught at Wellington since 2005.
I was not surprised when I heard Shelly Simpson was the Golden Apple Award winner. I have the privilege of working with Shelly every day. She is a phenomenal teacher! No little detail escapes Shelly’s attention. She cares about reaching each child’s needs, often working late to make sure she has thought of everything.
Congratulations Shelly, you truly deserve this award. I know personally the time and effort that you put into your job. You truly are an inspiration for others to follow.
Here’s a portion of the nomination letter:
As a former teacher myself, I cannot help but marvel at the organization, professionalism, and knowledge of curriculum that this master teacher possesses. I am convinced that every moment of my child’s day is thoughtfully managed and crammed full of learning opportunities. She is in constant communication with me, and responds within a few hours no matter what the issue. Her energy is boundless and her demeanor with the students is upbeat and positive at all times even during car pool.
My child has blossomed in her classroom, because she has the unique ability to adjust and compensate for individual needs. In short, she is the real deal. Ms. Shelly Simpson was born to teach and she hones her craft every day and I will be grateful for her for the rest of my days, because this is the year my child turned a very difficult corner and it is because he ran into one accomplished educator who gives her absolute best every day.
I encourage you to visit her classroom. Within five minutes, you will see the most well organized, stimulating environment that any child would be lucky to encounter.
